. . . the teacher (minister etc etc) works for the love of man, the artist
(scientist etc) works for the love of the thing -- and I think that the difficulty about a woman’s being an artist is not only that “the occupation runs counter to the usual expectations concerning women,” but that it is in a measure contrary to the nature itself of woman.
